All About "The Luminary Hermit"

Who am I? Why Astrology? What is "The Luminary Hermit" all about? How did I get my name?

In the wise words of Elyse Myers... "Great question, I would love to tell you!"

Who am I?
My name is Alonnah, AKA The Luminary Hermit.

I am a 31-year-old mother of 3, wife, and professional astrologer. I have lived in small towns all across Central Illinois (USA) my entire life. In my personal time, I have entirely too many hobbies, ranging from cooking and baking, gardening, arts & crafts, reading, singing, dancing, and so much more.

Personally, I struggle with a chronic illness known as POTS (Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome) and Orthostatic Hypotension. (This is why you will see me with salty snacks!) Despite some of my health challenges, I do love exploring new places, hiking, and learning about other cultures from around the world.

Why Astrology? How did you get started?

For many years, I attempted to follow a more traditional path. I have a deep passion for learning and always took the idea of a career very seriously. Even as a child, I was studying and reading everything I could get my hands on: true crime, foreign languages, science, history, and more. As a "Zennial" and someone raised by my mother, I was strongly encouraged to pursue college and start adding professional skills to my resume for as long as I can remember. As a young adult, I did pursue college, with many attempts at finishing a higher education degree, but nothing seemed to work out. Whether I was struggling to finish due to health and financial reasons, relationships, parenting, or losing interest over time... something always seemed to get in the way. I switched majors a few times, but nothing felt like it was truly “my calling.” I never felt satiated or like I was utilizing my full potential. Something was missing.

In my personal life, I was finding myself in toxic repeating patterns - unhealthy relationships, struggling with my health, maintaining motivation, and more. Eventually, I struggled to recognize myself. Despite trying to do "all of the right things;" going to college, settling down, having a baby, buying a house... life continually threw me a lot of hard lessons and curveballs.

Once COVID hit in 2020, I once again found my life in disarray. I was a out of work, and suddenly had more free time on my hands. Astrology began to pop up everywhere and I found myself completely captivated. I always found it interesting, but like many others, I thought basic “horoscopes” and Sun Signs were all that astrology had to offer. I was so wrong! In true Gemini Rising (and AuDHD) fashion, my new hyperfixation was Astrology. I had to know everything. My life became astrology podcasts, lectures, books, and everything I could get my hands on. It was quite daunting at first, especially with mixed information and the rise of “pop astrology,” but I have now found my way.

I always had an interest in the “unknown” and unanswered questions in life. I have always valued ancient traditions and wisdom, while also respecting that science and technology are excellent tools. Opinions can change as we have more information. Afterall, hindsight is 20/20. That has also become my approach to Astrology.

What is "The Luminary Hermit" all about?

My goal with The Luminary Hermit is to bridge ancient astrological techniques with modern systems. Astrology is excellent for seeing potential patterns, so I utilize astrology as a tool that is integrated in my daily life. My hope is that astrology will once again be recognized as a serious field of study for history, relationships, medicine, and more.

On a personal note, I would love to take a complex topic and be able to break it down in a way that makes it more accessible and digestible for others. Though I have many interests in astrology, the best title I have come up with is an “Integrative Relational Astrologer,” which is a wordy way of saying I like to use astrology as a tool or system in everyday life, specifically for those who want to better understand themselves, their patterns, and their relationships with others.

I never use astrology in isolation. I am always studying topics such as psychology, parenting and child development, neuroscience, medicine, trauma awareness, physiology, history, and more.  I also always do my best to provide a safe space for others, including those who are part of the LGBTQIA+ community, People of Color, those with disabilities or are on the neurodivergent spectrum. I also regularly take Continuing Education courses, including being trauma-informed, ethics, and equity in all community and professional spaces.

How did you get your name?

"The Luminary Hermit" came from many things rolled into one. When I first started providing astrological readings and life coaching services a few years ago, I struggled with feeling "seen." A huge task has been overcoming imposter syndrome and the original idea was to use a pseudonym or business name, rather than my own, to help provide myself a buffer. I was nervous about what family and friends might think about my transition into professional astrology.

At the time, I was studying more about my own astrological chart as well as Human Design. In Human Design, I have a 5/2 profile, which is often referred to as the "Hermit-Heretic" profile. In astrology, my Taurus Sun and Mercury (which is my chart ruler), are both in my 12th house. I knew I had a lot of information to teach and share with others, but I have learned that sometimes I need to retreat back into "hermit mode" in order to respect my own energetical boundaries. That step back also provides me with more time to learn, analyze, and then share more wisdom and tools with others. If I do not allow myself to take that time, I can burn out more easily.

The "Luminary" imagery came to me because I wanted to be a guiding light for others, or a little beacon of understanding as people are going through challenging times. I am often able to read a person's chart and help them feel "seen," or bring a sense of clarity. As a "Twelfth Houser," I am no stranger to feeling isolated, going through challenging times, or feeling misunderstood. The 12th house can be quite challenging or feel unclear at times, but one of my luminaries, the Sun, is always there to help shine a little light and pull me through. That is my metaphor for others.

I hope to be that small, shining lantern to help:

  • Guide you to a better understanding of yourself and your life path

  • Examine reoccurring themes in your life

  • Navigate difficult times

  • Help you feel more certain about your path and your choices

  • Understand your relationships with your partners, friends, children, parents, and more

  • Examine financial and career potential...

And so much more!
